While it is true that material selection plays an important role in determining the overall cost of a part, making that selection based solely on cost is not advised. In fact, it can lead to part failure and higher costs down the line.

Material Selection

One of the important steps in the design process for any engineering component is the selection of a material. The chosen material must be appropriate for the intended final application of the component and is the key satisfactory performance at a minimum total cost. Some characteristics to think about when selecting a material for a specific application would be:

  • strength
  • stability of properties in service conditions
  • electrical resistibvity
  • surface finishing

When choosing steel for your project, you must keep the use of your part in mind. With so many options, this choice can be daunting.

How Bracalente’s Experience Helped Their Clients

One Bracalente customer specified 360 brass, a brass alloy commonly used in machining applications, for a part component. The component was machined first and cold formed later, during final assembly. When choosing 360 brass, the customer did not consider the stress of the cold forming process, which put stress into the metal. The plating that the customer chose was not suitable for cold forming either, so it peeled and cracked.

During redesign, we suggested that 353 brass be used instead. This type of brass has better properties for cold forming. We also decided to treat the component with high ductility tin plating. This plating method allowed for more formability in the component, eliminating cracks and peels during final assembly.

With just two small changes, we gave the customer the high-end results they needed without increasing the production cost.
